Conservation Expert & Public Figure

Advocating for nature since 1990.

As a child in Palm Beach, Florida, Hunter Hartford McIntosh fell passionate for protecting the endangered sea turtle species which nests there. Over the years and decades, his love for the natural world expanded his conservation work to Alaska where he focuses on protecting the Tongass National Forest—our country’s largest.

Hunter specializes in all natural world conservation matters, from the seed of an idea to being a key player in successful law adjustments.

When he is not “boots-on-the-ground” in his efforts, or managing his nonprofit eco-luxury cruise line, The Boat Company, he travels to special events as a featured conservation speaker, and consults and educates through quoted form in media platforms and publications.

Topics of Focus

Land Protecting Public Land from Destructive Use

Hunter Hartford McIntosh has partnered with several environmental organizations to successfully remove an “exemption” to the “Roadless Rule” in the Tongass National Forest.

The success resulted in the preservation of old growth forest, which is in turn needed for the survival of several wildlife species of the area.

In complete adoration of natural lands, Hunter’s breadth of protection is not limited to the Tongass and has extended to other areas of the United States, whether through boots-on-the-ground efforts, via partnerships, public speaking and consulting.

Wildlife Preserving Imperiled Species

After observing the Alexander Archipelago Wolf in its Southeast Alaskan habitat, Hunter joined an already decades-long effort to protect the species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

After “unwarranted” and “warranted” petition considerations and “12-month reviews” by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency last concluded in August 2023 that the protection of the wolf is not warranted at this time.

While certain species may not warrant protection at times, time changes things and Hunter’s mission is to continue “fighting the good fight,” keeping an eye on this species and others as we move into the future.

Water Protecting the Aquatic Ecosystem

Through the vast and tenured network of his nonprofit cruise line, The Boat Company, Hunter worked with partners to successfully sue federal fishery managers for violating the National Environmental Policy Act and the Magnuson-Stevens Act.

His next project entails going after fishing “trawlers” who lazily drag large nets behind their boats to catch fish—subsequently killing every marine life in its wake (salmon, Orca whales and more)—to provide pollock to the U.S. fast-food chain industry.

“People tend to protect what they love.”
